What Food Can Be Cooked In A Cast Iron Skillet?

My wife has bought me a cast iron skillet. In fact she bought it for me a little while ago and is upset that I have not yet used it. Ireally do enjoy cooking but I have never really had any experience of cooking with cast iron cookware. Any suggestions as to where I should start would be really appreciated because I don’t want to wreck the skillet or the food because I don’t know what I’m doing? Thanking you in anticipation!

Cooking in a cast iron skillet is a great alternative to grilling in the cold weather. But be sure to season the pan first.

One of my favorite foods to cook in a skillet is seared fish. Heat up the skillet, brush some fish such as snapper, halibut, tuna, salmon, etc. with melted butter. Then sprinkle some seasoning on the fish, nothing special – you can make your own. Sear the fish both sides to provide a tasty “crust”, and then cook more gently until it’s cooked through. Delicious!

Just use it on the top of the stove or you can use it in the oven to cook any of your regular foods that you would cook in frying pan, or on a griddle. Cast iron is pretty easy to look after, but when you clean it don’t use detergent or put it in the dishwasher because the detergent stays in the cast iron and can make your food taste like it, as well as destroying the non-stick surface. You need to season it first. All you do is to coat it with veg oil or olive oil (indside) and cook it in the oven at about 425 deg f for aprox 20 min. Repeat this for about three times and it should be ready to use. Also when you clean it, scrub it out with a scouring pad or steel wool, and to dry it, without rusting, put it on the heat on the stove top until its dry and there you are!

There is nothing better to fry potatoes in!

In my house my mum used cast iron pans for almost all of her cooking. We cooked, steaks, fried chicken, hamburgers, saute potatoes. OK so just about any fried foods work well in a cast iron skillet.

Also pineapple upside down cakes cook really well in a cast iron pan. Or try popping some popcorn in one.. yummy.

They do not work well for recipes that have lots of liquid in them.

You can cook fried tomatoes, onions and sausage, eggs, pancakes, hamburgers, fried fish, pasta sauces, seafood dishes, steamed veggies, stir fry, sauteed anything. In fact, you can really use a cast iron skillet for just about anything.

We really enjoy using our cast iron skillet for all sorts of potato dishes. Hash browns, sliced fried potatoes, saute potatoes all taste great.

When it comes down to it, cast iron cookware is more or less just like any other pan – you just have to season it carefully and it will last for many years. And the weight will build up your strength!

It’s a skillet. You can fry anything you want. Just use some oil . . not much, but some.

Also, when cleaning it, don’t let it drip dry. Wash, rinse, then place on fire and dry with heat. Otherwsie, it will build a rust on the outside.
